Rockies Vs. Diamondbacks: Ubaldo Jimenez Looks For…

Read More: Ubaldo Jimenez (P – COL), Micah Owings (P – ARI), Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks

The Colorado Rockies enter Sunday’s finale with the Arizona Diamondbacks on the heels of a disappointing 12-3 loss. Jason Hammel allowed eight runs and then saw Eric Stults allow a grand slam to Justin Upton. It will be up to Ubaldo Jimenez to put the Rockies back on track in Sunday’s finale.

Jimenez (6-8, 4.00 ERA), subject of trade rumors, is on a three-game winning streak and pitching just as many expected him to do at the start of the season. Since his July 4 start against the Braves when he allowed three runs in 5.1 innings and was not economical with his pitches, Jimenez has allowed five runs over 20.2 innings in three starts. He has struck out 21 during that time.

Micah Owings replaces Barry Enright for the Sunday start. Owings has mostly pitched in relief for the D’Backs this season and will make his first start since May 26 when he faced the Rockies. In that game, Owings picked up the win after allowing one run in five innings. It wouldn’t be surprising if he also did some damage with his bat, once a notable hitter in high school and college.

First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. MT.

The Arizona Republic | azcentral.com

Tonight’s pitching matchup: Diamondbacks RHP Barry Enright (1-3, 6.49 ERA) vs. Brewers RHP Yovani Gallardo (10-6, 4.08).

This is Enright’s first big-league start since he was demoted to the minor leagues in early May. He went 8-2 with a 4.29 ERA with Triple-A Reno. Enright cited confidence as a reason why he struggled to start the season. Last year, he was 6-7 with a 3.91 ERA as a starter with the Diamondbacks. … Gallardo struggled in his previous outing, giving up six runs on 11 hits in four innings of work against the Colorado Rockies, but the righty has had an otherwise solid season so far. In his most-recent appearance against the Diamondbacks before the All-Star break, Gallardo got the win after striking out six and giving up only four hits.

Arizona Diamondbacks continue to shuffle batting order

by Nick Piecoro – Apr. 22, 2011 08:03 PM
The Arizona Republic

NEW YORK – The Diamondbacks have played 18 games this season, and manager Kirk Gibson has used a unique lineup 17 times.

slideshowDiamondbacks-Mets series photos | Box score | blogPiecoro’s updates

He rolled out a new one on Friday – this one featuring center fielder Chris Young in the leadoff spot for the first time this season – and he didn’t sound any closer to establishing a set lineup.

Gibson wouldn’t say whether Young would hit leadoff again Saturday, just as he has tried to avoid defining roles on his club when speaking with reporters.

“I’ve been pretty consistent with most of the guys,” Gibson said, referring to where players hit in the lineup. “But one of the reasons I don’t like to say things like that is because I know I’m going to change things from time to time. Any manager does. Nothing is etched in stone.”

Gibson says he doesn’t want to tell his players or reporters things he can’t follow through on, something one of his former managers, Sparky Anderson, did during his playing days.

“Sparky would say that it’s a lock to be up there for the rest of the year, and it would last about a day,” he said.

Young sounded as though he were willing to go with the flow, but he also seems to prefer hitting in the middle of the order. He had been hitting fourth and fifth.

“I was cool where I was initially,” he said. “Sometimes a manager wants to mix things up and that’s completely understandable.”

Enright’s up

The Diamondbacks are looking for right-hander Barry Enright to rebound from three rough starts to open his season. He has allowed four runs in each start.

Though the results weren’t there, Gibson thought Enright made progress in his most recent outing.

“I thought last time he actually started to throw all of his pitches and pitch,” Gibson said of Enright’s start on Sunday against the Giants, in which he allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. “I’d like him to continue that.”

Gibson said Enright wasn’t mixing his pitches well in his first two games – certainly not as well as he did last season, when he had a 3.91 ERA in 17 starts.

Rainy day?

The weather could cause problems Saturday. Forecasts call for a 100 percent chance of rain in the morning with a 50-70 percent chance in the afternoon and into the night.

Gibson doesn’t seem to mind.

“We practiced in the rain the first day of spring training this year,” he said. “We loved it. It was fun. It’s fun to play baseball. You don’t say it’s fun to play with conditions. It’s fun to play and put the uniform on.”

Short hop

Double-A left-hander Wade Miley, who hasn’t pitched since leaving his April 8 season debut with a rotator cuff strain, is scheduled to return to the mound on Monday for Mobile. Miley is one of the organization’s better pitching prospects.
