PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks President and CEO Derrick Hall has undergone successful surgery to remove his prostate and doctors found that his cancer had not spread to other areas. The team said on Tuesday that Hall is expected to recover fully and hopes to be back at work at Chase Field in the near future. The 42-year-old Hall disclosed in late September that a prostate biopsy had revealed cancerous tumors, but it had been caught in the early stages of the disease. Hall became the Diamondbacks’ president in September 2006 and added CEO to his title in January 2009. He previously worked for parts of 12 seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. | Arizona Diamondbacks’ Geoff Blum likely sidelined… | |
by Bob McManaman – Jul. 24, 2011 06:43 PM Third baseman Geoff Blum fractured his right pinkie finger while fielding a bouncing ground ball hit by Ryan Spilborghs in the second inning of the team’s 7-0 win over the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field on Sunday. He likely will be sidelined for two to three weeks. “It had a lot of top spin and it just jumped up on me,” Blum said. “I’ve been hit on the end of the finger before and played through it. I just assumed it was another typical bad-hop kind of thing.” But later, Blum couldn’t get a decent grip on his bat, and when he tried to throw the ball on another fielding play an inning later “it was shooting pain,” so he had to take himself out. Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news. Posted in dbacks-news | Comments Off

| Diamondbites: Diamondbacks Look To Even Series… | |
Read More: Ubaldo Jimenez (P – COL), Micah Owings (P – ARI), J.J. Putz (P – ARI), Josh Collmenter (P – ARI), Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers The Arizona Diamondbacks have been playing inconsistent baseball since the All-Star break, winning just four of the eight home contests held since Chase Field hosted the All-Star Game on July 12. Josh Collmenter and the D-backs will look to regain a winning record in the second half as they take on the Rockies at 5:10 PM Pacific time in Phoenix on Saturday night. Collmenter’s rookie season has exceeded expectations, as the young pitcher has posted a 5-5 record and an ERA of 2.65 over his 19 apperances, 12 of which were starts. Collmenter has given up zero runs in his past two starts, encompassing 14 innings of work — all against the Milwaukee Brewers. His last outing against the Rockies was much more difficult, when he gave up five earned runs over 4.1 innings in a losing effort on May 24. Other news and notes from the world of the D-backs:

| Weeks and Fielder receive big boos from Derby… | |
If you closed your eyes, it wasn’t hard to imagine you were in Yankee Stadium and that Weeks was wearing a Boston Red Sox uniform. The Bronx-type soundtrack didn’t end there. When Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder(notes) stepped into the box for his, he received the same sort of welcome. The beef the D’Backs fans had with both was legit, too: In selecting Weeks as one of his three picks for the NL Derby squad, Fielder had passed over Arizona outfielder Justin Upton(notes). That left those at Chase Field without a real horse in the race — but it also somehow created two enemies bigger than NL West mate Matt Kemp(notes) of the Los Angeles Dodgers. (Matt Holliday(notes) of the St. Louis Cardinals was the third rep for the NL.) Get MLB All-Star Game merchandise here! Earlier in the day, I heard Fielder say that he wanted to select three Brewers with his three picks, but was told he could only pick one. Whether or not he was joking, I’m not sure, but he did have numbers on his side when he selected Weeks (17 homers) over Upton (15). Still, Weeks isn’t Harmon Killebrew, exactly, so you can see where the hometown fans were mad in Upton getting neglected. If Upton heard the boos for the Brewers or the chants of “We want Up-ton,” he didn’t let on, tweeting “Why are we booing Ricky? (sp) He’s about to bang! #hrderby.” Thing is, you can’t blame Fielder for taking care of his boy, either. But Weeks definitely should have rewarded Fielder’s faith instead of bowing out after three boo-propelled home runs. Fielder, at least, turned the crowd a little toward his side, hitting four mammoth home runs to beat Holliday and David Ortiz(notes) in a first-round tiebreaker. What do you think? Were Arizona fans right in booing both Brewer teammates? Other popular stories on Yahoo!
